Tamil Nadu District Municipalities (Amendment) Act, 2002*

An Act further to amend the Tamil Nadu District Municipalities Act, 1920.
Be it enacted by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Tamil Nadu in the Fifty-third Year of the Republic of India as follows:-

1. Short title and commencement.- (1) This Act may be called the Tamil Nadu District Municipalities (Amendment) Act, 2002.
(2) It shall be deemed to have come into force on the 25th day of October, 2001.
2. Insertion of new section 3-GG.- After section 3-G of the Tamil Nadu District Municipalities Act, 1920 (Tamil Nadu Act V of 1920) (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act), the following section shall be inserted, namely:-
"3-GG. Appointment of special officer in certain circumstances.-(1) Not withstanding anything contained in this Act, or in any other law for the time being in force, in respect of Sholinghur town panchayat, which cannot be constituted on the 25th day of October, 2001 even after resorting to election process, the Government may, by notification, appoint special officer to exercise the powers and discharge the functions of the said town panchayat, until the day on which the first meeting of the said town panchayat is held after election to the said town panchayat.
(2) The special officer appointed under sub-section (1) shall hold office only for six months from the date of his appointment or for such shorter period as the Government may, by notification, specify in this behalf."
3. Repeal and saving.- (1) The Tamil Nadu District Municipalities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2001 (Tamil Nadu Ordinance 6 of 2001) is hereby repealed.
(2) Notwithstanding such repeal, anything done or any action taken under the principal Act, as amended by the said Ordinance, shall be deemed to have been done or taken under the principal Act, as amended by this Act.
