further to amend the Assam Basic Education.Act, 1954 Preainble.-Whereas it is expedient further to amend the Assam Basic Education Act, 1954 (Assam Act XXVI of 1954), hereinafter called the Principal Act, in the manner hereinafter appearing ; It is hereby enactea m the ninth year of the Republic of India as follows:-
1. Short title, extent and comm.enceinent.-{1) This Act may be called the Assam Basic Education (Amendment) Act, 1958.
(2) It shall have the like extent as the Principal Act.
(3) It shall come into force at once.
2. Ainendm.ent of Section 2(13) of Assain Act XXVI of 1954.- The following explanation shall be added to sub-section (13) of Section 2.
"Explanation.-There may be more than one region in the same subdivi· sion or a district''.
3. Am.endinent: of Section 17(1)(d) of Assam. Act XXVI of 1954.-Insert the words "if any" between the words "in the region" and
"as defined" occurring in the third line of Clause lD) of sub-section (1) of Section 17.
4. Ainendinent of Section 17(I)(e) of Assain Act XXVI of 1954.-The following explanation shall be added to Clawse (e) of sub- section (1) of Section 17.
"Explanation.-In the case of a Local Board the jurisdiction of which extends over more than one region, the Local Board concerned will elect two representatives to each of the School Boards of such regions''.
5. Ainendinent of Section 17(l)(h) of Assain Act XXVI of 1954.- /nsert the words "if any" between the words "Panchayats" and "of the"
occurring in the first line of Clause (h) of sub-section (1) of Section 17.
6. Ainendm.ent of Section 20 (I) of Assain Act XXVI of 1954.- The following explanation shall be added to sub-section (1) of Section 20.
"Explanation.-In the case of a reconstituted School Board the term of five years shall commence from the date of publication of the notification pf the names of the members in t.he official Gazette".

'1. Amendment of Section 27 of Assam Act XXVI of 1954.-The following shall be added as sub-section A of Section 27 :- -
"A. Notwithstanding anything coq.tained in the Act, if at any time the State Government, in consultation with the State Advisory Board for Basic Education or otherwise, is of the opinion that in order to further Basic Edu- cation, the area under the jurisdiction of a Schoul Board fixed by the State Government should be divided the State Government shall be competent to divide such area and constitute two or more School Boards in place of the already existing, after reallocatin~ the areas".
On the reconstitution of the School Board the term of office of the old School Hoard shall be deemed to have expired and its powers and functions shall vest in and _ be exercised and _ carried out by . the new School Boards in such manner as the State Government may direct)). A
