THE ASSAM PANCHAYAT (AMENDMENT) ACT, 2001

further to amend the Assam Panchayat Act, 1994.

Whereas it is expedient further to amend the Assam Assam

Panchayat Act, 1994, hereinafter referred to as the Act principal Act, in the manner hereinafter appearing, XVIII of

It is hereby enacted in the Fifty-second Year of the Republic of India as follows :-

In se rti o n of new sec - tion 70A

1. (1) This Act may be called the Assam Panchayat (Amendment) Act, 2001.

(2) It shall have the like extent as the principal Act.

(3) It shall come into force at once.

2. In the princ ipal Act, after section 70, the following new section 70A shall be inserted, namely

70A (1) Such number of offices of the President and the Vice President of the Zilla Parishad shall be / reserved, for the persons belo ngin g to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and the number of such offices bearing as nearly as may be the same proportion to the total number of offices in the State as the population of the Scheduled Castes or the Scheduled Tribes in the State bears to the total population of the State, in such manner as may be prescribed.

(2) Not less than one-third of the total number of offices reserved under sub-section (1) shall be reserved for women belonging to the Schedu led Castes or the Schedu led Tribes, as the case may be.

(3) Not less than one-third (including the

number of office s reserved for women belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes) of the total number of offic es of the Pres iden t and the Vice President of the Zilla Parishad in the State
