THE ASSAM MUNICIPAL (AMENDMENT) ACT, 1997
AN
ACT
further to amend the Assam Municipal Act, 1956. Preamble. Whereas it is expedient further to amendJ^sam Act the Assam Municipal Act, 1956, herein- ° ' ' after referred to as the principal Act, in the manner hereinafter appearing;
It is hereby enacted in the Forty-eighth
Year of the Republic of India as follows :

1. (i) This Act may becaliedthe Assam Municipal (Amendment) Act, 1997.
(2) It shall have the like extent as the principal Act.
(3) It shall come into force at once. Amendment 2. In the principal Act, in Section 33,— of Section r r j i

(i) for the existing sub-section (2), the following shall b e substituted namely : —
"(2) At the first meeting of the Munici- pal Board after a General Election called at the instance of the Deputy Commis- sioner or the Sub-Divisional Officer as the case may be, the Commissioner shall elect one from amongst the elected Commissioners to be the Chairman. The

Provided that when the first meeting is dissolved by the President without transacting any business on ground of irregularity in the convening of the meet- ing the next meeting will be deemed to be the first meeting for the purposes of this section as well as for the purpose of Second Schedule."
(ii) for the existing sub-section (3), the following shall be substituted, namely :—
"(3) The said Commissioner shall at the said meeting or at a subsequent mee- ting elect one of their elected Commissioners to be the Vice-Chairman "
Repeaiand 3.(1) The Assam Municipal (Amend-„A,®sam ment) Ordinance, 1997, is herebyNo.'niCof repealed.1997
(2) Notwithstanding such repeal, any- thing done or any action taken un- der the Ordinance so i epealed shall be deemed to have been done or taken under the corresponding pro- visions of this Act.
