Gujarat Municipalities (Amendment) Act, 2000*

An Act further to amend the Gujarat Municipalities Act, 1963.
It is hereby enacted in the Fifty-first Year of the Republic of India as follows:-

1. Short title and commencement.- (1) This Act may be called the Gujarat Municipalities (Amendment) Act, 2000.
(2) it shall be deemed to have come into force on the 3rd December, 1999.
2. Amendment of section 33 of Guj. 34 of 1964.- In the Gujarat Municipalities Act, 1963 (Guj. 34 of 1964) (hereinafter referred to as "the principal Act"), in section 33, for sub-section (1), the following shall be substituted namely:-
"(1)(a) The term of office of the President of a municipality constituted upon the general election held after the commencement of the Gujarat Municipalities (Amendment) Act, 2000 (Guj. 3 of 2000) shall be two and a half years.
(b) The term of office of the President of a municipality existing on the commencement of the said Act, shall be one year.
(c) Subject to the other provisions of this section, the President shall be eligible for re-election.".
3. Repeal and savings.- (1) The Gujarat Municipalities (Amendment) Ordinance, 1999 (Guj. ord. 3 of 1999) is hereby repealed.
(2) Notwithstanding such repeal, anything done or any action taken under the said Ordinance shall be deemed to have been done or taken under the principal Act, as amended by this Act.
