An Act Further to Amend the Andhra Pradesh Universities Act, 1991
Be it enacted by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Andhra Pradesh in the Fifty-fifth Year of the Republic of India as follows:-

STATEMENT OF OBJECTS AND REASONS
The Nagarjuna University was established under the Nagarjuna University Act, 1976 (Act 43 of 1976) to commemorate the memory or "Acharya Nagarjuna" and it is situated on the very soil where
Acharya Nagarjuna was born and lived.
In the consolidation of Laws, the said University was reconstituted and established as one of the Universities under the Andhra Pradesh Universities Act, 1991.
The Executive Council of the said University in its meeting held on 11th September, 2002 resolved to change the name of the Nagarjuna University as "Acharya Nagarjuna University" and also recommended to bring in suitable amendments of section 4 and Schedule of this said Act. The Government have accepted the said recommendations and accordingly decided to amend the said Act, (Act A of 1991) suitably.
As the Legislative Assembly of the State was not then in session it was considered necessary to give effect to the above decision immediately, the Andhra Pradesh Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2004 (A.P.) Ordinance I of 2004) was promulgated by the Governor on the 23rd January, 2004 and the same has been published in the Extraordinary issue of the Andhra Pradesh Gazette dated 24th January, 2004.
This Bill seeks to replace the said Ordinance.
1. Short title and commencement.- (1) This Act may be called the Andhra Pradesh Universities (Amendment) Act, 2004.
(2) It shall be deemed to have come into force on the 23rd January, 2004.
2. Amendment of section 4.- In the Andhra Pradesh Universities Act, 1991 (Act 4 of 1991) (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act), in section 4, to item (iv) the following proviso shall be added, namely:-
"Provided that on the date of commencement of the Andhra Pradesh Universities (Amendment) Act, 2004 the Nagaijuna University shall be renamed as "Acharya Nagarjuna University" for the purposes of this Act."
3. Amendment of Schedule Act 4 of 1991.- In the principal Act, in the Schedule, in the Table in Column 2, against Sl. No. 4, for the words "Nagarjuna University", the words "Acharya Nagarjuna University", shall be substituted.
4. Repeal of Ordinance 1 of 2004.- The Andhra Pradesh Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2004 is hereby repealed.
